The club was founded in 1895 as an auxiliary of the Central Christian Church in Indianapolis, Ind. First named the Zerelda Wallace Conversation Club, it became the Monday Afternoon Club, and about 1900 was shortened to the Monday Club. The club focused on topical conversations and guest speakers. A native of Vevay, Ind., Eggleston was a Methodist preacher (1857-1866), a journalist, and beginning in 1871, a novelist.
